Relationship to Flora of North America: Equal to Vitis cinerea var. helleri
Taxonomic Notes: Kartesz (1994) and Flora of North America (2016) recognize four varieties in Vitis cinerea including Vitis cinerea var. floridana (Vitis simpsonii), Vitis cinerea var. baileyana (Vitis baileyana), Vitis cinerea var. cinerea (Vitis cinerea), and Vitis cinerea var. helleri (Vitis berlandieri). These varieties were recognized as species by Small (1933) and their elevated status is supported by recent research (Wen et al. 2018) and in the treatment by Weakley and Southeastern Flora Team (2022). While Vitis berlandieri and V. cinerea are genetically distinct, there is continuity in the ranges of the two species (Uretsky 2018).

  • Counties with iNaturalist Observation only: These counties only have species observations from iNaturalist.

Data was gathered at the Genus level from the following

Sourced through communication with data owners - 2023 Botanical Garden Survey – available in the full source data - BONAP - IUCN

Data Standardization and Taxonomy

data standardization : All data sets were altered to matched a standard data structure. The specific translation of data sets can be seen here.

Assigning the State and County to each occurrence

When latitude and longitude data was used to assign the state/country when possible. If no latitude and longitude data was provided, the state and county names were pulled from the attribute data associated with the record. If a state or county name could not be assigned by either method the record was excluded from this analysis.

Flora of North America

If state level distribution information was provided for a given specific species, that information was used to filter the states in which counties are evaluated.
